We have already seen how having a wide choice of connections to process and paddles for rotary level indicators helps plant builders, designers, maintainers and end users in the choice of instrument to be installed within the process. The same importance in evaluating the most suitable configuration should be given to the possibility of extending the instrument.
The available space is the first detail to consider in choosing the location for the installation of the instrument, but it is not the only one. There are other elements it depends on, such as:
- the type of material to be detected;
- the emptying and filling methods of the container;
- the presence of other mechanical moving parts, such as mixers or vibrators.
When to install a vertical sensor with extension
Generally speaking, wall installation and parallel to the ground is the most common; however, in some cases it’s not possible to implement it. There are many reasons, including the possibility that the instrument would be difficult to reach for any maintenance, or that the material accumulates in a cone during loading, or that the presence of mixers or vibrators adversely affects the detection.
To overcome these problems, a vertical or oblique sensor is installed with the addition of an extension. These, in fact, extend the sensitive element so that it can come into contact with the material to be detected at the predetermined position, to signal its presence/absence and activate further plant automatisms.
The different CAMLogic extensions
CAMLogic has prepared several variants of extensions for its clients, in order to respond to their specific needs. The majority of them can be supplied with a custom length, although there are standard lengths always available in stock.
Extension without protection
The extension without protection, consisting of a simple bare shaft in stainless steel AISI 304, or galvanized iron, has a lower cost and is the first choice when it is necessary to extend the instrument for a limited length.
Extension with protection
Over 500 mm, and to reinforce the actual extension, it is advisable to install a variant with protection, consisting of a galvanized iron or AISI 304 stainless steel tube. The latter also makes the instrument suitable for contact with food products or particularly aggressive materials.
When the measurement to be achieved is uncertain, you opt for an adjustable extension. A part of the shaft is protected, while the remaining part presents holes to adjust the position of the propeller. In this way it is possible to regulate the length directly upon installation or testing of the instrument.
The flexible extension is the optimal variant conceived for situations with a lateral material loading, a process that could burden or stress the extension shaft. This extension consists of a cable with intermediate protections in order to achieve the right degree of flexibility without risk of damage.
